First Folio Shakespeare Festival
INTERN COMPANY AUDITION NOTICE
Much Ado About Nothing - SUMMER SEASON 2008
INTERNSHIPS
First Folio will be offering 5-7 Performance internships to early career
professionals or college students who are graduating or are entering their
junior or senior year in 2008. Interns will receive $400 as a stipend for the
summer season plus free training in the Folio Method and other
techniques as well as an opportunity to work at an Equity theater with some of
the finest actors in the Chicago area and beyond. Interns will be responsible
for providing 45 hours of work on stage and set construction, costume
construction or other technical tasks, as well as 15 hours of strike time, and
may be asked to act as members of the stage crew or box office/house management
staff during the run of the show. The interns will have the option of becoming
Equity Membership Candidates and earning weeks towards their Equity cards.
However, if they are full-time students, they will not be required to join the
program if they do not wish to. Interns may be cast in speaking or non-speaking
roles, depending on the availability and suitability. They will also understudy
several roles for the production.
DATES
First Readthrough/Folio
Training/Company Barbecue - Saturday, June 7th.
First Rehearsal - Monday, June June
16th. Rehearsals Mon-Thur evenings, Sat morning to afternoon, Sun,
afternoon to evening. Friday is the company day off.
Performance dates will be July 8th through August 17th. Rehearsals and
strike are TBA.
Performances are Wednesday through
Sunday, at 8:15 pm. Additionally, there will be one Sunday matinee, date TBA.
It is a nine week contract this year
(9 EMC points).
REHEARSALS
All rehearsals will be at or near our site in Oak Brook, in the western suburbs
of Chicago. No housing is available, and no public transportation is accessible
from our site.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Our rehearsals and the set-building schedule make
it difficult to maintain a full-time outside job during the term of the
contract. Please think of this internship as part of your education and please be
realistic about how much you can do.
FOLIO METHOD
First Folio utilizes the Folio Method of approaching Shakespeare’s text. All
actors will receive training in this method during the first week of rehearsals.
FYI
1) While carpooling is common amongst our casts, please remember that it will
always be the responsibility of each actor to make sure that he/she is able to
get to rehearsals and performances in the western suburbs on time. There is NO
public transportation convenient to the site. The use of a car will probably be
necessary for most.
2) We are an outdoor theater. This means that we sometimes perform or rehearse
in inclement weather. It may be hot during the day. It may get cold at night.
There are mosquitoes there, despite the fact that we have professional spraying
done. Bathroom facilities will consist of port-a-johns. Just wanted you to have
all the facts.
3) We have a lot of fun (see photos below). We also work very hard, and appreciate a good and
willing attitude in our Interns. We’ll never ask you to do anything that we
haven’t done ourselves. To paraphrase Hamlet ‘the willingness is all!’ If you
aren’t willing to help with anything that is asked - without question - please
don’t apply.
